The Economic Situation of Afghanistan



Afghanistan economy has tremendously improved since the year 2002 because of the infusion of billions of dollar in the international investments and assistance from other countries and also because of the remittances from expats from Afghanistan.

The recent improvement in the economic situation of the country is also because of the dramatic agricultural production improvement and the end of complete 4 years drought in most regions of the country. The government of the country is of the claims that the nation, Afghanistan holds up to 3 trillion dollars in the proven mineral deposits of the country that can make the country one of the richest mining regions on the surface of the earth. Meanwhile, because of the conflicts in the nation, the country is still one of the least developed nations in the world as they are ranking 175th on the UNHDI.  The GDP of the country stands at approximately 34billion dollars with the exchange rate of about $19.85 billion and the GDP per capita of the country is about $1,150.
Close to 35% of the population of the country are unemployed and about 36% of the population of the country are living on the poverty line of the nation, suffering from shortages in the following; electricity, housing, clean water that is good for drinking and enough food. The Karzai administration in the country together with the international donors of the country have been so committed to the improvement of the access to the basic amenities of the country by construction more infrastructure development, housing, education development, job programs, the economic reform of the nation and the medical care, especially for children and women in the country.
